When there is no evident cause of painful periods then it is classified as primary dysmenorrhea.
What are the major causes and symptoms of dysmenorrhea?
Primary dysmenorrhea is believed to be caused by over activity of uterine contractions in some women. When date of menstrual cycle is about to arrive the contractions to flush out unused uterus tissues which were build up for possible pregnancy begin to take place, in some women either these contractions are too big or there frequency is too much to cause pain. Such condition is called as primary dysmenorrhea. Primary dysmenorrhea may improve after adulthood or childbirth and it is more likely to affect young girls. Overall primary dysmenorrhea is not a harmful condition though pain caused by it can be debilitating for brief periods. Secondary dysmenorrhea is caused due to diseases and disorders like leiomyoma, adenomyosis, ovarian cysts and pelvic congestions. Contraceptive devices used for avoiding pregnancy can also cause dysmenorrhea, these devices if made up of copper are more inclined to promote dysmenorrhea. Fibroids and sexually transmitted diseases can also cause secondary dsymenorrhea.
There are many symptoms of dysmenorrhea which can help in distinguishing the normal or passing pain from the pains caused by this problem. Generally women with this problem suffer with pain before or at the start of their menstrual cycle and gradually it reaches at its peak within 24 hours of its onset, slowly it starts reducing and subsides completely after 2 days or within 2 days after menstrual cycle is over. The pain can be dull or sharp in nature and it can be felt in hips, lower back and thighs. Sometimes the pain is centered at the lower abdomen but may radiate towards hips and thighs, such type of pain is caused when there is excessive secretion of prostaglandin hormone which causes contractions in the uterus.
Excessive bleeding is possible in primary dysmenorrhea or due to other diseases and disorders which cause secondary dysmenorrhea. Nausea or regular vomiting sensation along with the pain during or before menstrual cycle is another symptom of dysmenorrhea. Women suffering with this problem may also face lethargy or ache all over the body which may make them feel lazy and out of energy all the time during the aggravation of the problem. Light headedness and diarrhea may also accompany the pain of dysmenorrhea which signifies the presence of the problem. The problem of primary dysmenorrhea may not be threatening but if it is secondary dysmenorrhea then it needs immediate attention as any of the disorder which promotes this problem can be harmful for normal health and reproductive system. Women suffering with dysmenorrhea may also find clots and pieces in the bleeding during menstrual cycle along with the pain.
